Author Visit – Dave Rudden

On Tuesday, 24th May, YA author, Dave Rudden came to speak to 1st, 2nd and TY students about his books. He also did a writing workshop with our 5th Years, designed to help them with Paper 1 of the Leaving Certificate English exam. Here’s an account of the visit by one of our 1st Years, Anna Carthy (1C).

Every shadow is a door, every nightfall brings danger. Fortunately for humanity, standing between us and the shadows are the Kights of the borrowed dark”- Knights of the Borrowed Dark, by Dave Rudden.

As we walked into the hall we instantly spotted a bright and bubbly red haired man! As soon as he started to speak the chatter ceased and all paid close attention to him. Eager faces shone up from the benches as Dave Rudden greeted us with one of his many jokes. Dave Rudden is a young author, teacher and storyteller who visited our school on Tuesday, May the 24th.  His stories about his books and writing journey can only be described as incredibly theatrical. They are not only a work of art but also a dive into his imagination. He had two writing tips for us. Firstly, ideas are everywhere and secondly, books are not made of one idea but out of lots small ideas. His imagination is one that is truly unique. A great example of this was the villian in his book, the woman in white, who ate lightbulbs. She was based on his own personal fear of glass getting into his blood stream. Overall, it was an incredible experience to meet such an amazing writer and a really funny and kind person.

Book Week 2022

HCK Book Week – That’s a Wrap

This year’s HCK Book Week has been particularly special as it’s the first time in two years we have been able to celebrate in person. The idea behind Book Week is to draw attention to reading and hopefully encourage students to start reading for pleasure. Events this year included Teacher Book Bingo – teachers wore a book quote and students had to match teacher names to the correct quote; a literary quiz in Cornelia Connelly Hall at lunch time (things got competitive); a visit from storyteller, Niall de Burca for 1st and 2nd Years; games of literary Pictionary in the library; and a Mad Hatter’s Fancy Dress Party in the library. In addition to these one-off events, we also ran week-long initiatives including Blind Date With a Book, Where’s Wally school search, Literary True or False Competition, and prize draws for taking a book out of the library. We also unveiled our new Pride section in the library. This area of the library was set up by a group of pro-active 5th Years who wanted to make sure that our library also included LGBTQ+ books for YA readers. Finally, we learned that Hannah Gerlitz (5th Year) will be taking over the role of Library & Debating Prefect from Jennifer Treacy (6th Year).

Well done to all who took part this week. I think Maeve Binchy (whom our library is named after) would be proud of the way students got involved to show their enthusiasm for reading.

HCK celebrated Roald Dahl Day with 1st and 2nd year on Monday 16th September, by hosting a fancy dress party in the Library. Students spared no effort in creating a colourful costume for the party. The 5th Year Angels also joined in the fun by dressing us as characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We wrapped up the lunch time party with a Roald Dahl quiz. The quiz was won by Eve White, Mairead Manning, Lucy Solan and Ellen Walsh (1st Year). Well done to all who came along and participated!
